Competitions

There are three (3) primary swimming meets for Special Olympics Swimmers during the season:

1. Swimming Exhibition (held in late July, historically in Orlando at the RAFC)

   • Consist of ~4 counties across Central Florida

   • At the Swimming Exhibition, swimmers will participate in time trials as opposed to formal competitions

   • The purpose of the time trials is to capture accurate times/scores for Regional Games

   • Swimmers are not required to swim at the Swimming Exhibition meet, but it is highly encouraged so their times can be established
     
     

2. Swimming Regionals (held in late August, historically in Orlando at the RAFC)

   • Consists of ~10 counties across Florida (so much larger attendance than the Swimming Exhibition)

   • The Swimming Regionals meet a time and scored meet, which means swimmers are required to compete at the Swimming Regionals if they want to qualify for Swimming State Championships
     
     

3. Swimming State Championships (held in late September)

   • The Swimming State Championships meet rotates every year (but has historically be in either Ocala or Sebastian)

   • Selection for the Swimming State Championships is based on the following factors:

     1. the swimmers performance at Regionals - historically, swimmers who place first in their event at Regionals are selected for States (but not all the time)

     2. the number of other swimmers competiting in an event

     3. the coaches discretion based on factors like the swimmers attitude and attendance record during the season

For each competition, the Man o'  War Junior Varsity swimmers are each entered into two (2) swimming events.

1. Group 1 swims in the Teaching Pool at the RAFC and the events are the 15-yard unassisted Swim and the 15-yard Kick with a Board

2. Group 2 swims in the Competition Pool at the RAFC and two events are the 25-yard Freestyle and the 25-yard Backstroke

Please note - if a JV swimmers competes in the Competition Pool (aka, the "Deep End"), it does not mean that swimmer has graduated to the MOW Varsity group.  In order for a JV swimmer to graduate to the Varsity group, they must pass all the skills on the skill assessment.
